Health

Winner: Michael Gagner and Stacy Inman

Just under five years ago Bakersfield had virtually no active branch of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Association. Michael Gagner and Stacy Inman changed that.

Gretchen Lightfoot, director of development for the Greater Los Angeles Chapter of the ALS Association, said that Gagner -- who has ALS, also know as Lou Gehrig's disease, a neurological disease that can make walking or speech difficult -- had been coming to support meetings in L.A. for four years with Inman, his wife, but the drive became too difficult. So, the couple proposed starting meetings in Bakersfield.

To raise money to support the Bakersfield outreach, Gagner and Inman organized the Walk to D'Feet ALS.

They raised $30,000 in 2004, $112,000 in 2005, and $116,000 in 2006. Now, the Bakersfield walk is second in size only to the L.A walk.
